The Sydney Film Festival is almost here. Screening the best new films from around the world from 3-14 June. Now in its 56th Year, the festival is celebrating a program filled with courageous, audacious and cutting-edge films. If you can't decide in choosing from the vast array of international and Australian films, the festival has categorised it's programme into six 'experiences'; Give me a kiss, Make me laugh, Take me on a Journey, Fire me up, Push me to the edge, and Freak me out, as well as including a selection of short films. Here are some of our best picks:
Give me a Kiss:
Eccentricities of a Blonde Hair Girl is a gem of a film, following the story of a young man who confides in a fellow train passenger about his secret love affair. A great gem of a film from Portuguese Director Manoel de Oliveira.
Make me laugh:
Black Dynamite is a high energy, raucous homage blaxploitation flicks. The film treads the line between satire and spoof and features a fantastic wardrobe full of 'fro's and flares.
Take me on a journey:
Be whisked away by Native Dancer, where witchcraft and the mob are set against each other in the dusty planes of Kazakhstan. A highly accomplished work with a captivating story.
Fire me up:
An insatiable due hit the streets of Prague in the 1966 Czech film Daisies, rampaging against work, war, men and materialism.
Push me to the edge:
Travel deep into the South Australian hinterland in the beautifully shot Last Ride, featuring Hugo Weaving as a brusque ex-con on the run with his young son.
Freak me out:
A nightmarish colonial vision comes to life in Van Dieman's Land. This visually striking debut is based on the confronting journey of a group of thieves as they escape into the Tasmanian wilderness.
