Debunking golf swing myths
Posted by RSVP on
Over the coming months our friends at The Ignite Golf Team are going to discuss the myths of the golf swing and the things they see happen every day on driving ranges around the country. This month they talk about the classic myth 'you must keep your head down during the golf swing'. This is the first bit of advice that people give when they want to help and yet it is one of the most detrimental to your game. If someone tells you to keep your head down or tries to hold it down, as I have seen so many times, politely tell them to go away.
In every other sport we play we move with the shot or kick yet in golf people try to stay still, does this make sense??? NO. Imagine trying to hit a tennis shot with your head staying still before, during and after you hit the tennis ball, not only would it look ridiculous but it would be ineffective.
The misconception by most people is the reason the head moves up and down it is not actually because you want it to, but it is that the body motion is incorrect. Many people tip their shoulders up and down and hence the head looks like it goes up and down as it would because it attached to your shoulders. So the first thing they say is keep your head still. What they should be saying is try to move your shoulders across your body in a rotational manner, this would fix the issue. The main thing to remember with your head in golf is that it can move side to side but never up and down.
PRACTICE DRILL: Place a golf club across your chest and take the address position then rotate your shoulders nice and level across your body.
Good Golfing!
