Brisbane Date Night Ideas
Brisbane comes into its own once the heat of the day eases off. The river catches the last of the light, the bridges and the city towers light up, and warm evenings make it easy to sit outside with a drink and see where the conversation goes.
We've pulled together date night ideas along the river from South Bank to New Farm, Howard Smith Wharves and Northshore, plus a couple of indoor options for stormy nights. Some are gentle first-date plans you can wrap up in a couple of hours, others are better saved for when you know you'd like a whole evening together.

Sunset CityCat ride
A CityCat ride is one of the simplest first dates in Brisbane, and late afternoon is the best time to do it. The F1 service runs between UQ St Lucia and Northshore Hamilton and keeps going into the evening, passing the city, South Bank and the Story Bridge as the light changes and the skyline lights up.
Meet at a terminal, grab a spot on the open deck and ride a few stops together, then hop off at South Bank or Howard Smith Wharves for a drink or dinner. It's cheap, easy to keep short, and easy to stretch out if it's going well. Check the last service home before you set off.
Best for: first dates · Budget: $ · Where: Brisbane River, various terminals

An evening at South Bank
South Bank stays busy well into the evening, which makes it a comfortable place to meet someone new. The riverfront paths are lively and well lit, there are plenty of restaurants and bars, and you get a view of the city lights across the water.
On Friday nights the Collective Markets set up on Little Stanley Street, so you can browse the stalls, find something to eat and keep walking if the conversation is flowing. Check the South Bank website for what's on the week of your date.
Best for: first dates, free or cheap dates · Budget: Free to $$ · Where: South Bank
Eat Street Northshore
Eat Street Northshore is an evening market on the river at Hamilton, open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. There are plenty of food stalls and live entertainment, so it's easy to graze and try a few things together.
It's busy and casual, which suits a second date when you'd like something more relaxed than a restaurant. The CityCat finishes its run at Northshore Hamilton, so you can arrive by ferry. Weekend nights can get crowded, so an earlier arrival makes it easier to find a seat and hear each other talk.
Best for: second dates, casual nights · Budget: $ to $$ · Where: Northshore, Hamilton
Rooftop drinks at Fiume
Fiume is the rooftop bar at Crystalbrook Vincent, part of the Howard Smith Wharves precinct. It looks out over the river and the city towers, with the Story Bridge close by, and serves cocktails, local beer and wine and share plates.
A sunset drink here is an easy first or second date, and you can head downstairs for dinner in the precinct if you'd both like to stay. Fiume is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and stays open later on Friday and Saturday nights, so check the hours and book ahead on busy evenings.
Best for: first and second dates · Budget: $$ to $$$ · Where: Howard Smith Wharves
Dinner at Howard Smith Wharves
Tucked under the Story Bridge, Howard Smith Wharves is a riverside precinct with a good spread of places to eat and drink. Options range from Felons Brewing Co. for a sunset beer and a bite to Greca for modern Greek, plus Mr Percival's, Stanley, Yoko Dining and more.
It's lively but not overwhelming, and the river and the lit-up bridge do a lot of the work for you. Several venues take walk-ins, while the restaurants are worth booking. The CityCat stops right there, so you can arrive by ferry and skip the parking.
Best for: later dates, special occasions · Budget: $$ to $$$$ · Where: Brisbane City (below the Story Bridge)
A show at Brisbane Powerhouse
Brisbane Powerhouse is a converted power station on the river at New Farm that now hosts theatre, comedy, music and festivals. The building is open until late seven days a week, and there's usually something on in the evening, from local theatre to touring musicians.
Pair a show with dinner at Bar Alto, the Powerhouse's riverside restaurant, which serves dinner from Wednesday to Saturday and on select show nights. A show gives you something to talk about over dinner, which makes it a good second date and a reliable plan when the weather turns.
Best for: second dates, rainy nights · Budget: $$ to $$$ · Where: New Farm

An evening show at QPAC
The Queensland Performing Arts Centre in South Bank has several venues under one roof, with musicals, theatre, orchestral concerts, comedy and talks through the year. Look for something you'd both enjoy, and book seats together.
QPAC has its own restaurants and theatre bars for a pre-show meal or a drink at interval, and the Piano Bar opens after shows on Friday and Saturday evenings if you'd like to keep talking. Because it's a full evening, it suits a later date or a special occasion, and it's an easy choice on a rainy night.
Best for: special occasions, rainy nights · Budget: $$ to $$$$ · Where: South Bank
Sit Down Comedy Club
The Sit Down Comedy Club at the Paddo Tavern in Paddington runs stand-up on Friday and Saturday nights, plus special events and touring acts on some weeknights.
Laughing together is a quick way to relax, and you don't need to fill every silence while the comedians are on. It's licensed and for over-18s only. Check the program before you book, as the line-up varies from week to week.
Best for: second dates, rainy nights · Budget: $$ · Where: Paddington
Twilight Story Bridge climb
If you both like a challenge, climbing the Story Bridge is a memorable way to see the city. Guided climbs leave from Howard Smith Wharves and run daily, rain or shine, with twilight and night sessions alongside the daytime climbs.
It's probably not a first-date activity, but it's a great one once you know each other a little. A twilight climb lets you watch the city go from daylight to lights on, and you can finish with dinner at Howard Smith Wharves below.
Best for: adventurous couples, special occasions · Budget: $$$$ · Where: Howard Smith Wharves, below the Story Bridge
First date safety tips in Brisbane
- Meet somewhere public. A busy riverfront like South Bank or Howard Smith Wharves, a bar or a show is ideal for a first meeting.
- Stick to well-lit, busy areas. If you go for a walk after dinner, stay on the main riverfront paths where there are other people around.
- Get there and home on your own. Translink buses, trains and CityCats cover most of the inner city. Check the last service home on the Translink journey planner before you head out.
- Tell a friend. Let someone know where you're going, who you're meeting and when you expect to be home.
- Keep it short. A drink or a ferry ride is enough for a first date. You can always plan a second.
- Keep chatting on RSVP. Hold off on sharing your number, address or workplace until you're comfortable.
- Trust your instincts. If something doesn't feel right, it's fine to leave early.

Book a show. QPAC in South Bank has theatre, music and comedy across several venues, Brisbane Powerhouse in New Farm runs evening shows and festivals, and the Sit Down Comedy Club in Paddington has stand-up on Friday and Saturday nights.
From the open deck of a CityCat, from Fiume rooftop bar at Howard Smith Wharves, or from the Story Bridge itself on a twilight climb. The river faces the city skyline from all three, so you see the lights come on as the evening sets in.
Translink buses, trains and CityCats cover most of the inner city, and the CityCat runs into the evening with stops at South Bank, Howard Smith Wharves, New Farm and Northshore Hamilton.
