Salamanca Market
Salamanca Market fills Salamanca Place every Saturday, with hundreds of stalls selling Tasmanian produce, food, crafts and art. It's busy and cheerful, which takes the pressure off a first meeting: there's always something to point at and talk about.
Meet at a café along the sandstone warehouses, wander the stalls for an hour or so, then decide together whether to keep going. Arrive earlier in the morning if you'd rather avoid the biggest crowds.

Battery Point heritage walk
Just up Kelly's Steps from Salamanca Place, Battery Point is one of Hobart's oldest neighbourhoods, with narrow lanes, colonial cottages and harbour glimpses. Arthur Circus, a ring of early cottages around a small green, is a lovely spot to pause.
A self-guided stroll costs nothing and gives you plenty to chat about. If you'd like a destination, Narryna, a Georgian merchant's house on Hampden Road, is now a heritage museum (it's closed some days and over winter, so check first).

Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens
The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens sit on the Queens Domain, about two kilometres from the CBD, and are open every day. Entry is free, so a walk through the gardens is an easy, low-key date in any season.
Bird in Hand now runs the restaurant, tasting room and takeaway kiosk on site, so you can turn a stroll into coffee or lunch if things are going well. Note that the Conservatory is currently closed for restoration.

Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG)
TMAG, near the waterfront, combines Tasmanian history, natural science, Aboriginal culture and art under one roof. General entry is free, which makes it a great rainy-day option and an easy first date.
Galleries give you natural conversation starters, and you can see as much or as little as you like. Check the website for current exhibitions, as some special exhibitions may be ticketed.
Best for: rainy days, first dates · Budget: Free · Where: Hobart waterfront
kunanyi / Mount Wellington
The 1271-metre summit of kunanyi / Mount Wellington gives you views over the city, the Derwent and well beyond. You can drive up Pinnacle Road, or let someone else do the driving on the Mt Wellington Explorer bus, which leaves from the city.
Dress warmly even in summer, as the weather on top can be very different from the city. Pinnacle Road can close for snow, ice or maintenance, so check the Wellington Park website before you head up.

Waterworks Reserve
Tucked into the foothills of kunanyi in Ridgeway, Waterworks Reserve is a peaceful City of Hobart reserve built around historic reservoirs. The Reservoirs Circuit is an easy loop of under three kilometres, and there are picnic tables, barbecues and toilets.
Pack a picnic and make an afternoon of it. It's open every day; vehicle access hours change with the seasons, and dogs aren't allowed because the reserve is part of the water catchment.
Best for: picnics, easy walks · Budget: Free · Where: Ridgeway
MONA by ferry
MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art, is one of the most talked-about galleries in Australia, built into the riverbank at Berriedale. The ferry from Brooke Street Pier takes about 30 minutes and is half the fun, giving you time to chat on the way.
Some of the art is deliberately provocative, so it suits a date where you're both comfortable with a bit of debate. Tasmanians get in free with a booked ticket; other visitors pay entry. MONA isn't open every day, so check opening days and book ahead. There are several bars and restaurants on site.
Best for: rainy days, culture lovers · Budget: $$–$$$ · Where: Berriedale
Derwent River harbour cruise
Hobart Historic Cruises has been running harbour cruises on the Derwent for more than 30 years, departing from Murray Street Pier. Options include harbour cruises with commentary, a lunch cruise and a dinner cruise.
Seeing the city from the water is relaxing and gives you a shared experience to talk about. It suits a second or third date, or a celebration for an established couple.
Best for: something different · Budget: $$–$$$ · Where: Murray Street Pier
Theatre Royal
The Theatre Royal on Campbell Street is Australia's oldest working theatre, and its intimate auditorium makes any show feel like an occasion. The program covers drama, music, comedy and touring productions.
Pair a show with an early dinner nearby and you have a classic evening out with built-in conversation afterwards. The theatre also runs tours if you'd like a daytime look behind the scenes.
Best for: evenings out · Budget: $$–$$$ · Where: Hobart CBD
Puddleduck Vineyard
Puddleduck is a family-run vineyard in the Coal River Valley near Richmond, north-east of Hobart. The cellar door offers a guided tasting overlooking the vineyard and dam, plus a menu of local produce.
It's a relaxed setting for a long lunch, and bookings are recommended. Agree on a designated driver, or keep the tasting light, and consider a wander around historic Richmond afterwards.
Best for: long lunches · Budget: $$–$$$ · Where: Richmond
Bruny Island day trip
Bruny Island is a full-day outing best saved for when you know each other a little better. Drive to Kettering, about 35 to 45 minutes south of Hobart, then take the SeaLink car ferry for the short crossing.
Once there, you'll find rugged coastline, walks and local producers. Bruny Island Cheese Co. at Great Bay has a cellar door where you can sample its cheese and beer. Plan your ferry times and allow for queues in busy periods.
Best for: established couples · Budget: $$–$$$$ · Where: Bruny Island

Frequently asked questions
Salamanca Market on a Saturday, a walk through the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens or a visit to TMAG all work well. They're public, relaxed and easy to wrap up after an hour if the conversation isn't flowing, or stretch into lunch if it is.
Entry to the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens and to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) is free. A self-guided walk through Battery Point or a picnic and the Reservoirs Circuit at Waterworks Reserve also cost nothing.
TMAG on the waterfront is an easy, free option. MONA is a longer outing that's mostly indoors, and Tasmanians get in free with a booked ticket. An evening show at the Theatre Royal is another good choice.
Yes, Pinnacle Road runs to the summit, but it can close because of snow, ice or maintenance, and the weather up top changes quickly. Check the Wellington Park website before you go, or take the Mt Wellington Explorer bus from the city.
We couldn't find a balloon operator flying over Hobart, so we've taken it out of this guide. Tasmania's main balloon operator is based in Launceston. For views from above in Hobart, kunanyi / Mount Wellington is the easier option.
The ferry from Brooke Street Pier on the Hobart waterfront is the most relaxed way to go and takes about 30 minutes. You can also drive, but parking at MONA is limited.
